Crustaceans

Crustaceans

Introduction

In this module I will present three chapters, the first of which will give you the basics on phylogeny, which you will find is essential for most modules in the Schmid Training Course. The second chapter will introduce you to crustaceans and their larval development - first in brine shrimp, and then in other crustacean species in the third and final chapter. At the end of this module, you should understand some of the major changes that occur during these animals’ larval development.

Chapter 1: Phylogeny 101

Now you know how to read a phylogenetic tree and know what you can expect from reading a phylogeny to understand the evolution of development. Let’s move on to crustaceans and have a look in detail at the development of the amazing brine shrimp. This animal is easy to obtain in the laboratory thanks to their resting eggs, which makes them easy to study.

Chapter 2: Introduction to Crustaceans

Now that you are familiar with the larval development of brine shrimp, we will study the development of other species of crustaceans! The aim of this video is to understand variations in development patterns by relating them to phylogeny and ecology.

Chapter 3: Larval development

The illustration of the diversity of development modalities should give you some autonomy during the Schmid Training Course, where you will have the opportunity to test your observation and analysis skills!

 Larval development animation

The development of brine shrimp, but also of copepods or peneids, is anamorphic, meaning that segment addition is done progressively from a sub-terminal region. This animation, showing a brine shrimp, represents this phenomenon of addition of segments during the first phases of elongation.
